About me

My teaching and research are directed toward the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education, with emphasis on teacher education, online education, and mobile learning.

I was born and raised in Toowoomba. In 1967 I commenced my undergraduate degree in Chemistry with the first group of students to enrol on the campus of what is now USQ. After graduation, in 1970, I moved to Brisbane where I completed my Masters degree in Organic Chemistry at the University of Queensland while undertaking research at the Queensland Institute of Technology (now QUT). In 1973 I completed a Diploma in Education at the University of Queensland. I taught and was Principal in Queensland secondary schools for a total of 17 years before joining USQ as a lecturer in 1991. During 2001-2002 I worked with what is now the Learning Design and Technology group at Purdue University in the USA. Since returning to USQ in 2002 I have served in various administrative roles as well continuing with teaching and research. I am currently Professor (Educational Technology) and Chair of Academic Board.

My current research interests centre on online education, integration of ICT in teaching, and the educational application of multimedia. My publications list includes links to the full text of a number of papers.

I am a member of several professional associations. From 1995 until 2001 I was chair of the Toowoomba Chapter of the Queensland Society for Information Technology in Education and during 1999 - 2001 I was Editor of the QSITE Journal, QUICK. From 2005 until 2009 I was Vice-President of the Information Technology Council in the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education. I was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Technology and Teacher Education from 2005 until March 2012 and Editor-in-Chief from then until March 2015.

I maintain blogs at DrAlb, mostly for links and occasional professional posts, and at pamatravel, for notes about travels, have an entry in Linkedin and am active on Twitter and Facebook. I cycle and walk for fitness and enjoy photography when I have a little time to spare.
